Candidate Forum for the State House seat for district 61B
October General Membership Meeting
Monday, October 27th
Painter Park (34th and Lyndale)
6:30 to 8:00 pm

Join us at the October General Membership Meeting to hear from the
candidates for the 61B State House Race. This is your chance to ask the
candidates about the issues that matter most to you. Both Jeff Hayden and
Farheen Hakeem have committed to participating in the forum. We’ll also
hear about the Minneapolis school referendum.

In addition to hearing from the candidates we will also be discussing and
voting on the 2008 La Posada CAP.

Help Get Out The Vote (GOTV) in Lyndale
This year the Lyndale Neighborhood Association is going to be working to get
all Lyndale community members out to the polls. LNA believes that an
important part of a healthy democracy is having as many people participate
as possible. To that end, LNA is organizing several opportunities for
people to work on nonpartisan Get Out to Vote (GOTV) efforts through their
neighborhood association.

On each of the following days we will be hosting Get Out To Vote parties
from the LNA offices. If you have an hour or two to give on any of these
days, please think about using it here.

Tuesday, October 28th
5:00 to 8:30 pm
We will be hosting a phone bank at the LNA offices and organizing
doorknocks. Food and snacks will be available to volunteers around 5:30.

Saturday, November 1st
11:00 am to 3:00 pm
We will be hosting a phone bank at the LNA offices and organizing
doorknocks. Food and snacks will be available to volunteers around 12:00.

Election Day – November 4th
We will be organizing phone banks and doorknocks through out election day.
We are also looking for people who can provide people with rides to the
polls and several people who are willing to be on call to vouch for
neighbors at their polling places throughout the day.

We will have very simple scripts and materials available starting Monday for
people who would like to help out with these activities. One of the nice
things about nonpartisan GOTV activities is that all you're trying to do is
encourage people to vote, so you don't have to try and convince anyone to
vote for anyone else.

If you can’t make it to any of our organized activities and would like to
help out, please contact me and we'll get some materials set up for you to
phone call or door knock at your convenience.
To help us keep everything organized please let me know what days you would
like to volunteer for at mark at lyndale.org or 612.824.9402 ext 16.

4th Annual Halloween Walk
Monstrous Crime Out!
Sunday, October 26th
4pm Meeting at 3200 Pleasant Ave S.
This is a strategic, proactive Crime Prevention Walk sponsored by the
Lyndale Walkers. Everyone is invited, it is a family friendly walk. If one
has not experienced Shirley in the Gorilla suit, you really shouldn’t miss
it. Costumes are absolutely optional. Just join us!

Help Out with Kids Vote
Kid’s Vote is looking for help staffing tables in Lyndale. We're expecting
over 15,000 kids to vote at our Kids Voting tables on Election Day - Tuesday
November 4th, and we need over 800 volunteers to help us staff these tables
and assist kids with their ballots. Nearly all of our volunteer shifts in
North Minneapolis are full, but we still need a lot of help covering South
Minneapolis.

Volunteering is very easy and extremely rewarding. There are three different
volunteer shifts (6:30-9:30 a.m., 2:30-5:30 p.m., & 5:30-8:30 p.m.) at each
voting location and we need two volunteers per shift. Painter Park, Horn
Towers Highrise, and Lyndale Community School are a few of the many voting
locations in South Minneapolis where we still need help.

Thousands of kids are learning about our program in schools all across the
city and they are VERY excited to vote in November. The last thing we want
is for them to go to the polls only to find out that they can't participate
because no one was willing to volunteer!

People interested in helping should contact: Autumn L. Chmielewski, Kids
Voting Minneapolis Volunteer Coordinator at autumnchm at hotmail.com or
612-729-1963

Lyndale Neighborhood Lawn Signs – Each, one of a kind!
Block clubs, this is a Call to Action!
Lyndale community members have the chance to make their own lawn sign by
completing either of the following phrases, “I am making Lyndale
neighborhood better by
.. “and “
..makes me feel safe.” (In English and
Spanish). Peter H. Thompson from Neighborhood art on Wheels continues to
work with us on building community through public art on this latest
project.

Show Lyndale unity while expressing yourself independently (and creatively)!
Block clubs show your stuff! The block or block club with the most signs on
Thanksgiving, Thursday November 27th,win a free pizza party! Block must
have at least 5 residences with signs to be eligible to win the party. We
will debut the signs at the General Membership meeting Monday, October 27th
at Painter Park. Signs will also be available at the LNA office to pick up

Halloween Tips
Halloween is one of the most exciting times of the year for children, but
sometimes the most hectic for parents. Nearly 94 percent of children
between the ages of four and twelve participate in Halloween activities each
year. The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) reminds
parents to take a moment to consider basic safety precautions that will make
Halloween a safer night of fun.

*	CHOOSE bright, flame-retardant costumes or add reflective tape to
costumes and candy bags so children are easily seen in the dark. In
addition, carry a glow stick or flashlight.
*	PLAN a trick-or-treating route in familiar neighborhoods with
well-lit streets. Avoid unfamiliar neighborhoods, streets that are
isolated, or homes that are poorly lit inside or outside.
*	NEVER send young children out alone. They should always be
accompanied by a parent or another trusted adult. Older children should
always travel in groups.
*	ALWAYS walk younger children to the door to receive treats and don’t
let children enter a home unless you are with them.
*	BE SURE children do not approach any vehicle, occupied or not,
unless you are with them.
*	DISCUSS basic pedestrian safety rules that children should use when
walking to and from houses.
*	CONSIDER organizing a home or community party as an alternative to
“trick-or-treating.”
*	MAKE sure children know their home phone number and address in case
you get separated. Teach children how to call 911 in an emergency.
*	TEACH children to say “NO!” or “this is not my mother/father” in a
loud voice if someone tries to get them to go somewhere, accept anything
other than a treat, or leave with them. And teach them that they should
make every effort to get away by kicking, screaming and resisting.
*	REMIND children to remain alert and report suspicious incidents to
parents and/or law enforcement.
