Urban Tree Walk & Survey
Tuesday, April 28
Starts at 5:30 pm
Meet at the Blaisdell Rain Garden (32nd & Blaisdell)

The Urban Tree Project is a two to three year project, with a simple =
goal -
maximize the tree plantings in the Lyndale Neighborhood so our community =
can
enjoy the benefits of an urban forest for years to come. =20

The first step in the project is to conduct a tree survey to see where =
we=92re
missing boulevard trees in the neighborhood. The committee will be
conducting the survey on Tuesday, April 28th. The committee and =
volunteers
will be gathering at the Blaisdell Rain Garden (32nd and Blaisdell) at =
5:30
pm for a quick orientation from the Minneapolis Park=92s Forestry =
Department.

After the orientation, we=92ll divide the neighborhood and volunteers up =
into
small groups to conduct the survey. We=92re hoping to have enough =
people to
cover the whole neighborhood in a couple of hours.

To sign up to help with the tree survey or with the Urban Forest Project
contact Mark Hinds at 612.824.9402 ext 16 or mark at lyndale.org.

City Trees Program=20
A thousand trees are being made available to city residents for planting
this spring. Since 2006, the City of Minneapolis has funded the City =
Trees
program, which has provided a low-cost way for folks to help build the
city=92s urban tree forest. The trees cost $25 each, and are =
approximately six
feet tall with a one-inch trunk. Residents can order one tree per =
household,
and all trees will be made available on a first-come, first-served =
basis.=20
=20
Varieties of trees available include Black Hills spruce, Korean mountain
ash, prairefire crab, accolade elm and bur oak. This year, there are =
also 50
mount royal plum trees available, which produce edible fruit that=92s =
great
for jellies, jam, sauces or for eating straight off the branches. (Note:
residents who purchase the plum tree must attend a workshop on Saturday,
June 20 to learn about fruit tree care and to pick up the tree.)=20
=20
Orders for trees can be completed online starting on April 3 by visiting
Tree Trust at www.treetrust.org <http://www.treetrust.org/> or by =
calling
651-644-5800. You can also order a tree by picking up an order form from
your neighborhood group or local library. In previous years, the trees =
have
sold quickly, so place your order early.=20
=20
Folks who order trees will need to pick them up on one of three days. =
Trees
can be picked up at Franklin Middle School East parking lot,1501 Aldrich
Ave. N. at the following times:=20
