November General Membership Meeting 
Monday, November 23rd
Painter Park (34th & Lyndale)
6:30 to 8:00 pm

Join us at the November General Membership meeting to hear about LNA’s new
housing programs – which include low interest loan programs for
single-family and multi-family housing units; a program to help create
affordable, green housing in the neighborhood, and an innovative way to help
renters in Lyndale become home owners.  At the meeting we will also be
hearing from Restorative Justice in Action, who LNA is partnering with on a
restorative justice program for the neighborhood.  We will also be holding a
community vote on LNA’s 2010 budget.  Treats for the meeting will be
provided by Holly Reckel and Lisa Lewis.

Childcare is available through Leonardo’s at Lyndale for children 4 to 12
years old, starting at 6:30 pm, at Painter Park.  For more information check

Lyndale Food Drive
To help out during the Holiday Season LNA is collecting food for the
Sabathani Food Shelf between November 9th and November 23rd.  Just bring
your nonperishable food item to the November General Membership meeting or
drop it off at the LNA office (3537 Nicollet Avenue) and we’ll deliver all
of the items to the Food Shelf on the 24th.  The Sabathani Food Shelf serves
the Lyndale Neighborhood, so you’ll know your donation is going to help your
fellow community members.

Restorative Justice Community Action Orientation
Tuesday, November 17th, 2009
6:00 – 7:00 pm
Lyndale Neighborhood Building

Restorative Justice Community Action gives community members a voice in the
justice process. Using trained facilitators, Restorative Justice Community
Action brings community members and people who have committed offenses in
Minneapolis neighborhoods together in small group meetings to decide how to
make amends in the community. All participants have a voice in the process
and the outcome.

Lyndale Neighborhood Business Association Meeting
Thursday, November 19th

Champions Banquet Room

Come meet Meg Tuthill, your council member elect for the 10th Ward.  At the
meeting we’ll be having an open discussion with Meg about issues impacting
business in the Ward.  The featured business will be Chris Dixon who is the
Community Attorney for the 5th Precinct.  He’ll be talking about his work
here in the precinct.

Volunteer Opportunities
Here are just a few of LNA’s current volunteer opportunities.  Want to
volunteer, but not sure where or how.  Schedule a volunteer get-to-know ya
meeting with Mark <mailto:mark at lyndale.org>  or Sarah
<mailto:sarah at lyndale.org>  or 612.824.9402.  There fun and easy.  We’ll
just sit down and help you figure out where the right place for you to
volunteer is.

La Posada Volunteer Opportunities:
It’s the holiday season and we’re looking for volunteers for our 12th annual
La Posada event.    There are many opportunities for involvement before and
during the event, which will be held on Sunday, December 13th from 3:30-7:00
at Lyndale School.  We need people to help with: Decorating the cafeteria,
Preparing food, Welcoming people, Serving food, Handing out gifts, Helping
to facilitate pictures with Santa Claus (elves), Suspending the Piñata in
the gym, Helping with the kids games and art activities.

Somali Reading Program Volunteers
We’re looking for adults who are willing to commit some time to helping
Lyndale youth improve their reading skills.  The reading program meets on
Monday’s from 5:30 to 6:30 pm at Albright Townhomes.  To volunteer or for

LNA Volunteer Planning
To help make sure that volunteering with LNA is everything it can be and to
help encourage more people to volunteer with their neighborhood LNA is
developing a volunteer plan.  We’re looking for a couple of people to help
develop the plan over the next three months.  We’re expecting to have two to
three meetings of around an hour; there will also be a limited amount of
work outside the committee meetings.  For more information or to volunteer

Lyndale School Tours
Want to learn of the great things happening at Lyndale School?

Come and join Elizabeth Short, parent of a Lyndale student, for a guided
tour of the school.  Ms. Short explains many of the programs at Lyndale as
she leads you through the school visiting the classrooms.  She can answer
your questions, and help you become better acquainted with the Lyndale
Community.  Elizabeth has been a Lyndale parent for eight years and she
knows every nook and cranny.

As attendance boundaries have changed, Lyndale School is expanding to
include the students in Kingfield and East Harriet Farmstead neighborhoods,
whose parents desire a community school experience. If you want to see if
Lyndale is a good fit for your student and you, sign up for a school tour.

Tours are being held on:
Tuesday, Nov. 17, and 24 at 9:00 AM
Thursday, Nov.19 at 10:00 AM.

Please come and visit, have a tour and have your questions and concerns
answered.  If you are unable to come at the stated times, please call the
school at 612-668-4000, and a tour can be arranged for you.

La Posada!
Sunday, December 13th
3:30 to 7:00 pm.

Lyndale will celebrate La Posada on Sunday, December 13th in Lyndale School
from 3:30 to 7:00 pm.  Las Mujeres Latinas en Accion of the Lyndale
neighborhood are proud to organize the 12th Annual la Posada celebration.
We are meeting now to plan this magnificent event.

Before serving food we’ll sing the traditional La Posada song together to
ask to enter. We will serve traditional foods such as Tamales, prepared by
community members, rice, beans, buñuelos, and beef franks for kids.   Hosmer
Music Series partners with us to present Mexico Lindo folklorico dancers
again this year Santa Claus will be there ready to meet the kids and for
photos.  We will also have games and art activities for the children.  

Admission to La Posada is free, however, we ask for a suggested donation of
$3 for adults to help cover the food expenses.  There are many volunteer

Farewell RINA! / Lyndale Program Manager Meet and Greet
Thursday December 3rd from 6:00 – 7:30PM

After six years Rina Rossi is leaving the Youth Farm and Market Project as
the program manager for the Lyndale Neighborhood.  On December 3rd Youth
Farm is holding a farewell party for Rina and providing a chance for
everyone to meet the new Lyndale Program Manager.  

Small Business Crime Prevention Workshop
Crime affects small businesses.  Of the crimes that can occur, robbery is
one that can take a large emotional and financial toll on the owner and
employees.

Crime Prevention Specialists from 3rd and 5th Precincts in the Minneapolis
Police Department would like to invite all small business owners in south
Minneapolis to a robbery prevention meeting.

Come learn about our free public magnet school and the Montessori method of

Recreating an Early Twin Cities Christmas
Presentation by the Minneapolis Historic Homeowners Association
Thursday, December 10th
7:00 to 8:00 pm

Many people today wish to experience or recreate an early Christmas.  They
crave those bygone days of a simpler life, a more memorable time, an
old-fashioned Christmas in the Twin Cities.  We will look at the celebration
of Christmas in the metropolitan area from 1850 to 1940.  The comparing of
old traditions, decorations, gifts and even the preparation of the Christmas
dinner, with those of today, may surprise you.  You will learn how to
capture an old fashioned Twin Cities Christmas and recreate it for yourself.
One-hour slide presentation.

Upcoming LNA Committee Meeting Schedule
Everyone in the neighborhood is invited to get involved with one or more of
LNA’s Committees.  The Committee’s form the backbone of LNA’s work in the
community and are a great way for people to be involved in making Lyndale a
great place to live.

Housing, Planning, and Development
Wednesday, December 2nd (Note new date and time)
6:30 to 8:00 pm at the LNA Office (3537 Nicollet)

The H, P, & D Committee will be working on development guidelines to help
guide future development in the neighborhood.  The Committee will also be
talking about what it wants to work on during the coming year. The Committee
is currently looking for new people to get involved and would encourage
anyone who is interested to come to a meeting and check it out with no
strings attached.
